Emerging sectors in UK

IT and Technology

2018 was a positive year for business growth in the IT and technology sector. Cybersecurity professionals have been in increasing demand in light of a recent wave of cyber-related crime. Many vital skills are needed, so recruiters face problems attracting the ideal candidate.

Construction

The IHS Markit on the Purchasing Managers Index has published figures showing positive growth of 52.2 percent in the construction industry, and job creation remains strong, with investment returning to the sector.

FinTech

Short for financial technology, this sector looks likely to dominate the UK economy. With the finance industry experiencing challenges, demand for technical skills remains high.

According to the London Stock Exchange, Fintech companies are anticipating 88 percent growth over the coming three years. Demand is so high, employers are relying on contractors rather than permanent employees.

Healthcare

Health professionals have been in increasing demand. The requirement for temporary medical and nursing staff has predominated due to problems in NHS Trusts. Health Education England has revealed that there is a shortage of 42,000 nurses, therapists and midwives in the NHS. The body also found that unless illness rates decrease, the health service workforce will need to increase by 190,000 professionals by 2027.

Engineering

As more engineers retire than graduate, the outlook for stability and job security is positive. The replacement pool of talent is undersized, with 182,000 employees needed to fill apprentice and graduate roles each year until 2022. Hiring is focused in particular on food/agricultural chemicals, speciality chemicals, plastics/petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals.

Digital advertising and marketing

The advertising industry goes from strength to strength, having adapted to the digital revolution. Eight successive years of growth have occurred, with audio-visual content creation set for big things. This £1.3 billion subdivision grew by 14 percent in the first six months of 2017.

It is estimated that a single student living in UK will need approximately £800 a month to meet basic living expenses such as accommodation costs, food, books and equipment and other necessities. This is in line with the Home Office recommended figures for living outside London.This figure is given as a guide only. The amount you actually spend will depend a lot upon your personal lifestyle. The following breakdown of costs is designed to give some idea of how this figure is reached. Do not forget to include the cost for the type of accommodation you have decided upon.

The cost of living will need to be increased if you will be bringing your family to the UK whilst you study.

  Food

  If you do not live in catered Halls, the cost of food based on a western style breakfast, hot evening meal, plus a light midday meal is likely to be £30-£40 per week. There are a great many outlets for buying food on campus and a hot meal ranges from £3.50-£6.50. 

  Heating and lighting

  If you choose to live in private rented accommodation, the cost of heating will not be included in your rent. If you are not used to cold or damp weather, you may need to keep the heating on for 8 months of the year. Cheaper rented accommodation does not usually have central heating, and gas or electric fires provided can be expensive to run. Allow a minimum of £400 for the year. Heating and lighting is included in the cost of University accommodation.

  Books and equipment

  The cost of books varies for different courses and continues to rise; the average figure for one year is £400. You are strongly advised to check with your department to find out any extra costs anticipated. Second-hand books can be bought from the bookshop on campus and from outlets run by the Students’ Guild. You will have to pay for your own stationery, computer disks/memory sticks and photocopying.

  Warm clothing

  The average figure for warm clothes, for one year, is £460.

  Other costs:To cover such items as launderettes and dry-cleaning, personal hygiene items and household articles, you will need approximately £340 for the year.
